May election picture comes into focus

FLORESVILLE -- As of press time March 3, former Floresville city Councilman Sherry Martinez Castillo is the only one to have filed to run in the city’s special election set for May 10. However, she still might face competition.
Floresville City Manager Henrietta Turner indicated that City Attorney Louis T. Rosenberg said that the special election does not adhere to the same Feb. 28 deadline as other area contests.
Under Section 201.054 of the state’s Election Code, the filing deadline for a special election is 5 p.m. on the 62nd day prior to the date of the election. Because that date would fall on Sunday, March 9, the date automatically is extended to Monday, March 10.
The code also stipulates that ballot applications cannot be filed prior to the date that the governing body -- the city council -- orders the election. The council did not vote until Feb. 27 “to obtain approval of necessary administrative paperwork in order to proceed” with the special election. It did, however, vote on Jan. 23 to approve dates and times for early voting.
Those interested in filing still may do so at Floresville City Hall until March 10.
For entities with a Feb. 28 filing deadline, these candidates filed for places on the ballot:
