Trials set for criminal cases Murder suspect could face jury March 24
Jury selection ahead of the trial of 19-year-old Kyle Jacob McKay of Kirby is set for March 24. McKay is charged with the November 2012 murder of 22-year-old Dakotah Reynolds, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and possession of more than 4 grams but less than 200 grams of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1.
According to court records, McKay -- who is set to return to Wilson County District Court for a docket call March 12 -- was in court Feb. 25 for a pretrial hearing. Also appearing that day before 218th District Court Judge Donna Saxon were:
•Benjie Burke III, 25, of Gilmer, charged with intoxication manslaughter in the Jan. 21, 2012, death of his passenger, 30-year-old Justin Gregory Jones of Edmond, Okla., in a head-on crash on U.S. 181 north of Floresville. He appeared for a pretrial hearing, with his next appearance being a docket call set for March 12 and jury selection ahead of his trial set for March 24.
•Dallas Warren Crisp, 30, and 20-year-old Roxie Jean Talerico, both of Pleasanton, scheduled to appear in connection with their charges stemming from a Jan. 15, 2013, burglary and subsequent police pursuit in Floresville. This did not occur, because the Bexar County Jail would not release the pair for transport to Wilson County, so their appearance has been reset for March 31.
•Pedro Silva, 46, of San Antonio -- half of a duo charged in an October 2013 robbery near the Guadalupe County line -- was present for a pretrial hearing. He returns to court March 12 for a docket call, with jury selection ahead of his trial set for March 24.
When district court convened March 4, the following defendants were among those to appear before 81st Judicial District Judge Donna Rayes:
•Royce Houston Smith, 40, of Floresville, indicted in July 2013 on one count of possession of a prohibited substance in a correctional facility but eluded capture until Feb. 21, was arraigned. He is set to return to court for a pretrial hearing March 31. A docket call is set for April 17, with jury selection ahead of his trial set for April 21.
•Basilio Garcia, 30, Smith’s alleged accomplice, charged with possession of a prohibited substance in a correctional facility and possession of methamphetamine, was present for a pretrial hearing. He is set to return for a docket call April 7, with jury selection ahead of his trial scheduled for April 21.
