WESLACO -- On March 1, Floresville High School senior Brianna Hernandez and sophomore Ebony Cortez competed at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association (THSWPA) regional meet for Region 5.

Both girls competed and represented Floresville High School exceptionally well. Ebony and Brianna both set personal records for weightlifting totals in squat, bench press, and deadlift. Brianna lifted 60 pounds over the automatic qualification mark of 565 pounds for all three lifts in the 105-pound weight class. She gained the privilege to represent Floresville High School at the THSWPA State meet to be held in Corpus Christi. Brianna has worked extremely hard during the 2014 powerlifting season.

Coach Donnie Bishop said Brianna has been a great leader for the Jaguar powerlifting team this year, and that he looks forward to the opportunity of continuing to be her coach for two more weeks.

Brianna set personal records of 245 pounds in the squat, 105 pounds on the bench press, and managed a deadlift of 275 pounds. Her 625-pound total was 60 pounds more than she needed to qualify for state. Ebony also set a new personal record with a squat of 310 pounds.
