AUSTIN--U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, issued the following statement in honor of the 24 veterans, including several Texans, who will be awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest commendation for combat valor, today at the White House:

“Today is a proud day for these heroes, their families and the great state of Texas. Many who are being honored today gave selflessly to the cause of freedom in the face of discrimination. In addition to their bravery on the battlefield, they broke through barriers to make our military a more diverse body that represents Americans of all races who love this country and fight to defend her.

“Sadly, many of those honored today have passed, but as they are honored in spirit, may their loved ones feel the embrace of a grateful nation. We are blessed beyond measure to enjoy the freedoms and way of life that were secured by the selfless service and sacrifice of these true American heroes.”

Senator Cornyn serves on the Finance and Judiciary Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
