Jail escapee to return to court March 24
Jordan Robert Lewis, who already was sentenced in January to two 18-year prison terms in connection with his March 2012 escape from the Wilson County Jail, is set to return to court March 24. That is the day 218th Judicial District Judge Stella Saxon set for jury selection ahead of Lewis’ trial on additional charges associated with the same incident.
Court records indicate that Lewis, 30, was present in court for a docket call March 12. When he returns to court, he will be tried on charges of aggravated assault, and aggravated kidnapping. This is because, as court documents indicate, Lewis allegedly brandished a knife when he carjacked then-72-year-old Carolyn Orth before leading law-enforcement officials on a vehicular pursuit that ended in Atascosa County. (See “Jail escapee gets 18-year prison term,” Jan. 22.)
Lewis also will stand trial on an unrelated burglary charge.
Other defendants present in court March 12 included:
•Agapito Rios, 33, and James Jimenez, 46, each charged with murder in the June 2008 shooting death of 35-year-old Ricardo Lopez de la Rosa Jr. of San Antonio. The two suspects were present in court for a docket call, with both set to return April 29 for a pretrial hearing, then for a docket call June 3. Jury selection ahead of their trial is set for June 23.
•Kyle McKay, 19, of Kirby, charged with murder, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and possession of more than 4 grams but less than 200 grams of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1, following the November 2012 death of 22-year-old Dakota Reynolds. Because the prosecution is preparing for Lewis’ trial, McKay’s court appearances have been rescheduled, with pretrial April 29, docket call May 14, and jury selection May 27.
•Benjie Burke, 25, of Gilmer, charged with intoxication manslaughter in the Jan. 21, 2012, death of his passenger, 30-year-old Justin Gregory Jones of Edmond, Okla., in a head-on crash on U.S. 181 north of Floresville. He appeared for a docket call, for which he will again appear April 7. Jury selection ahead of his trial is set for April 21.
Other defendants also appeared. See related article, page 11A.
