Poet’s Corner debuts: ‘Rain’
Ruby Taylor Leonard
By Ruby Taylor Leonard
The first poem I ever wrote was for my daddy, Milton Taylor. After graduating from Floresville High School in 1951, I went to work in San Antonio. It was a bad drought year and I was concerned about Daddy’s peanut crop.
One night about 1 a.m., I woke to the sound of heavy rain on the roof. I wrote my first poem, “Rain.”
Oh wonderful day
Little drops from the sky.
A visit from God
In clouds passing by.
What’s this coming down
In this wonderful shower?
Baskets of food
Bouquets of flowers.
Oh, where is the rain?
There are fields that are bare
No baskets of food
No flowers to care.
Oh land of depression
The end is nigh,
But he hasn’t forgotten
There are clouds passing by.
Next time you sit down to your table, remember to thank a farmer.
