Officials have released the identity of a man killed March 26 in a multi-vehicle crash on S.H. 97 outside Floresville.

Trooper Anthony Flores, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol, identified the victim as 68-year-old Roger Miller of La Vernia. Flores said that Miller is a retired San Antonio Police Department officer. Chief Bruce Ritchey confirmed that Miller also previously worked as a sergeant with that agency. He also had served as a La Vernia city councilman.

According to troopers at the scene of the crash, the preliminary investigation reveals that at approximately 8:45 a.m., the driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck attempted to avoid striking a stray dog that was in the roadway when his vehicle was struck in the rear by a tractor-trailer. The impact sent the pickup truck into the path of Miller’s Honda Ridgeline pickup truck, with which the Chevrolet collided almost head-on. The Ridgeline was grazed by a fourth vehicle as it came to rest on the grass shoulder.

The identities of the other drivers have not been officially released, but the driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck was flown from the scene via Methodist AirCare.

Eastbound traffic on S.H. 97 was being diverted onto F.M. 539 while westbound traffic was being detoured onto C.R. 305, while troopers continued their investigation. The roadway was expected to be closed at least until 1 p.m.
