Letter: Correcting misinformation about FISD

Editor:

Re: “Cursive writing: a relic of the past or key to the future?” March 19

I would like to address some misinformation about a March 26 letter to the editor in response to the referenced column and other information being disseminated in public. The letter specifically requested parents contact the Floresville ISD superintendent concerning teaching cursive.

My wife is a teacher in Floresville, so I know first-hand that, not only does FISD teach cursive writing, it is a requirement of TEKS, which is the “state standards for what students should know and be able to do.” I encourage readers to check the TEKS website, http://bit.ly/1rFJxie. From my observation, it would appear that, although students are taught cursive, many of them, for whatever reason, tend to resort to printing instead. Perhaps this is just a sign of the times.

In my opinion, FISD is in great hands with Dr. Bays and many other wonderful administrators, such as South Elementary Principal Shelley Keck, who, not only are teaching cursive, but meeting or exceeding many other requirements demanded of teachers in today’s society.

I would encourage readers to get to know schoolteachers and administrators. Let them know that you appreciate the work they are doing. If anything, they, teachers and administrators, are performing exceptionally well under the difficult situations society is asking them to teach.
