1917-2014

Juanita “Janie” Mungia Muñoz, a lifelong resident of Wilson County, Texas, entered eternal rest Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at 5:52 a.m. in the Regency Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Floresville, at the age of 97 years and 18 days. Janie was born March 8, 1917, in the Three Oaks community in Wilson County, the daughter of Manuel and Teofila Acosta Mungia.

Janie attended schools in Poth and Dewees, and married Carlos Muñoz on March 27, 1936, at Camp Ranch in Wilson County. After marrying into the Muñoz family, Janie left the country and moved to Floresville. Janie’s beloved husband of 21 years preceded her in death in 1957. Janie was the owner and operator of Janie’s Beauty Shop in Floresville for more than 20 years. She also loved to sew, designing and making dresses for her younger sisters and later her three daughters. Janie served as member and president of Guadalupanas, member and vice regent of Catholic Daughters, board member and officer of Seniors Group (CCSCT) where Janie was recipient of the “Outstanding Senior Volunteer” award, member of ACTS, and was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville. The family wishes to express thanks to Regency Manor staff for their care and concern for Janie.

Janie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carlos Muñoz; her daughter-in-law, Gloria Constantino; and her siblings, Manuel, Jose, Maria, Virginia, and Sulema.

She is survived by her daughters, Stella De Los Santos and husband Benny of San Antonio, Lydia Martinez and husband Waldo of Floresville, and Ofelia Sanchez and husband Raymond of Floresville; her sons, Carlos Vidal “Billy” Muñoz and wife JoAnn of Floresville, and Richard Constantino of San Antonio; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Trine Salazar and husband Gregorio and Minnie Reyna, all of San Antonio.

Visitation was held on Friday, March 28, at 5 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

Rosary services were led by the Catholic Daughters Court No. 2497 of Sacred Heart Church.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, officiated by the Rev. Frank Kurzaj, and assisted by deacons Scott Donaho and John Bosques and the Rev. Phil Henning.

The family wishes to thank Martha Figueroa, Spanish choir director, for their beautiful music at the funeral Mass.

Interment followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Floresville, where cousin Jesse Lara, a close family friend, closed the prayer service leading all in singing “Los Mañanitas” as he played his accordian.

Serving as pallbearers were Janie’s grandsons, Albert Martinez, Robert Sanchez, Benjamin De Los Santos, Frank Sanchez, Carlos R. Muñoz, Michael Constantino, John De Los Santos, Saul Sanchez, and Erick Constantino.
