PLEASANTON -- After finishing second in the team standings at the District 28-3A golf tournament held March 24-25 in Pleasanton, the La Vernia Bears are now preparing for the regional tournament. In addition, a pair of Lady Bear golfers will also be making the trip.

In the boys competition, Rusty Story led La Vernia after shooting a 74 and 83 for a two-day total of 157. His score was third-best overall. John Hill was close behind with a total of 163. He was fourth in the individual standings.

Landon Richter shot a 174 and finished sixth overall, but was not listed as part of the Bears’ five-man team. He did qualify for the regional tournament as an individual, however. Ricky Utt finished seventh with a two-day total of 175, Hayden Chall shot a 178 to finish 10th, and Luke Moczygemba rounded out the team with a two-day total of 182 and an overall finish of 13th. The Bears finished second behind Pleasanton, and fared well among a field of nearly 40 golfers.

On the girls’ side of things, La Vernia didn’t have enough players to fill out a five-person team, but still sent a trio of Lady Bears to the competition.

Freshman Shawnee Allen led the way for La Vernia and finished first overall to claim the district championship. Allen shot a 77 and 73 for a two-day total of 150 -- 33 strokes ahead of the second-place finisher. Kimberlyn Crisp shot a 99 and 109 for a total of 208. Her score was good enough to grab sixth place. Kassidee Thomas also represented La Vernia and earned an eighth-place finish with a score of 227.

Allen and Crisp will both advance to the regional tournament.

The Class 3A Region IV tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday, April 14-15, in Corpus Christi. The boys will play the Gabe Lozano Sr. Course, while the girls will play Oso Beach Course.
