First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States: Congress shall make no law ... prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, ... .”

We live in a free country where everybody has equal rights. Thus, we hear the anger, loud protests, boycotts, and demands for justice when someone -- or a group of people --is discriminated against.

Discrimination is evil and wrong; it hurts society. Ours is an inclusive society that accepts tolerance and diversity. Students are learning to live in a diverse world. We cannot have them grow up to discriminate against other cultures: Visions of the KKK come to mind.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has a program called “Teaching Tolerance,” and is working to make schools more inclusive and nurturing “where equality and justice are not just taught, but lived.” It is a program designed to teach the next generation to live in a “diverse world.”

We like to think that we live in a diverse and tolerant society; however, the CEO of Mozilla Firefox was recently forced out of the company. Brendan Eich was forced out because of his personal belief that gay marriage is against his faith.

It happens that six years prior, he had donated $1,000 to support Proposition 8 when it was on the ballot in California. (Although Prop 8 to ban same-sex marriage did pass by 52 percent, the courts later overturned it.)

Replying to an online post about Firefox, “Prairie Grouch” of Grand Prairie, Texas, wrote on our website that he was “mad as hell” and not going to take it anymore. He suggested we strike a blow against Firefox and the “small tyrannical minority” associated with those radicals in the gay-rights movement.

He uninstalled Firefox on his computer and asked others to do the same. “It’s far past the time when the majority of Americans, which comprise the Christian community” to push back.

I have joined Prairie, and switched browsers.

Another commenter, however, questioned the effectiveness of such a move. His contention was that we are only hurting ourselves by not using Firefox. “I know you are trying to make LGBT people realize that their actions are untenable, but in no way is that going to stop or deter them,” he wrote.

His point was that most technology companies are owned by gays or gay-rights activists, so that our protests would have no effect other than hurting ourselves.

It is important to understand that this push back is not against gays. The fact that companies may be owned by gays is irrelevant to this argument. This push back is against those who would take away the free speech rights of others. This push back is against those who advocate for free speech only as long as the speech agrees with them.

Removing Firefox from our computers has everything to do with those who would deny the First Amendment rights of citizens, conservatives or otherwise. As Prairie wrote, the Christian community has been quiet so far. “How’s that working out?”

“Tolerance,” according to the dictionary, is the “willingness to accept feelings, habits, or beliefs that are different from your own.” People are losing their careers or being forced to close their businesses, not because of any action they have taken, but because of their beliefs. This could have a chilling effect on free speech and political discourse.

It appears that conservative Christians who believe in religious liberty are in the crosshairs. It is time they begin a push back and Firefox is the place to start.

One would think so, Chief, but never underestimate the ability of voters to be duped, the media to advocate progressive lies, or the Republicans to lose a winning issue.
