William ‘Bill’ Schroeder
William “Bill” Schroeder, 85, of Floresville, Texas, entered rest on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. Bill was born to Fred and Grace Schroeder on Aug. 18, 1928, in Spooner, Wis.
After enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, Bill’s military career spanned more than 36 years. He proudly served our country during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He retired from the Texas Air National Guard at Kelly Air Force Base in October 1982, and went on to join VFW Memorial Post 8555 in Poth in December 1994, where he briefly served as post commander. Bill was a beloved, longtime member of the Floresville United Methodist Church choir. An avid fisherman, while living in Alaska in the 1950s, he enjoyed salmon fishing. He loved to read, reading literally every book he could get his hands on. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.
Bill was preceded in death by infant son Tommy; his parents; brothers Wayne and Don Schroeder; and sister Dorothy Strand.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; sisters Doris Rockel and husband Larry of Pueblo, Colo., and Donna Marker and husband Jim of Gillette, Wyo.; sons Gary Schroeder and wife Margie of San Antonio and William Schroeder and wife MaryAnn of San Marcos; daughters Patricia Mokry of Adkins, Teresa Carvajal and husband Frank, and Vicki Bird and husband Jimmy of Floresville; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 12, at noon in the Floresville United Methodist Church in Floresville. A reception for family and friends will be in the fellowship hall following the service.
Interment will be held in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
