Bus video sparks media firestorm

FLORESVILLE -- TV news programs throughout Texas and even ABC’s Good Morning America have rebroadcasted the KSAT 12 story about video footage of a Floresville Independent School District (ISD) school-bus driver mocking a crying student earlier this year.

The story, which aired March 31 on KSAT’s 10 p.m. news broadcast, showed a video clip that the station obtained of a bus driver -- identified only as “Ms. Pat” -- taunting a crying student and urging Floresville South Elementary School students on her bus to do likewise. District officials said they were unsure how KSAT obtained the video footage.

However, following the initial news broadcast, Superintendent Sherri Bays said in a statement that Floresville ISD already was alerted of the situation and was probing the matter in the week prior to being contacted by KSAT.

“As per the information received by the district, there was one singular incident that was clearly unprofessional and inappropriate conduct by the driver,” Bays said. “It was addressed with that driver immediately and before KSAT 12 made any contact with the district.”

Additionally, Bays said she boarded the bus unannounced and spoke with the students about the importance of reporting any incidents in which anyone treats them or their friends badly. In a meeting with the district’s transportation department, staff were reminded of behavioral expectations and how to appropriately address discipline concerns with students.

On April 2, Bays said the driver still was employed with the district, but did not drive her bus that day. Later that day, she no longer was employed with the district. Since the situation is a “personnel matter,” Bays would not comment whether Ms. Pat resigned or if her employment was terminated.

You can get all the information you need about what's going on at school just by talking to your kids. Don't rely on the school to notify you of what's happening.

I wonder if the bus driver was a relative of Mr. Beaver? I believe he has several relatives that are bus drivers...hmmm. I agree Prairie Grouch - zero tolerance for bullying has led to more bullying, not less.

The school finds out information and makes a decision to hide it/resolve it. Let parents know what is going on so that they can make final decision. We are the parent not FISD.

Has anyone asked when this incident actually happened? A month before it hit the news guys. In other words, nothing would have happened if it weren't for KSAT12. FISD can let their employees treat our children anyway they ... More ›
