Stockdale tennis teams stay busy
The Stockdale tennis program has been busy. The athletes played in Seguin on March 18, traveled to Runge for a tournament March 19-20, and hosted a junior high tennis tournament in Stockdale on March 22.
In Seguin, junior varsity boys Samuel Scriven and Nathan Golla reached the second and third rounds, respectively. Sarah Nichols and Shelby Riley participated in the first round of consolation in girls doubles, as did the team of Lori Marroquin and Noelia Torres. The mixed doubles teams of Sabrina Garza and Michael Saucelo, and Christian Segura and Diamond Carl participated in the first round of consolation.
In the Runge Tie-Breaker varsity tournament, matches consisted of playing the best two of three 7-point tie-breakers. The players had to reach 7 points by a margin of 2 points. The players were placed in a pool with a round-robin format, where the athletes faced each player in their pool.
In mixed doubles play, Dylan Dunn and Lauryn Coston finished in second place with a pool play record of 8-1. Jesse Opela and Lacey Dugi ended with a record of 3-6. In boys singles, Anthony Bennett finished in second place with a record of 6-1. Alex Vela and Travis Covington finished with a pool play record of 4-4 in boys doubles, while Tristan Marquez and Joel Marquez finished with a record of 3-5. Hannah Hernandez had a record of 2-5 in girls singles, while teammate Velma Vidal was 1-6.
In the Stockdale Junior High Tournament, the host team made a good showing.
In eighth-grade competition, the girls doubles team of Cayci Mills and Karlye Lynn took on teammates Madison Fitzsimon and Callye McGee in a very competitive final match. Cayci and Karlye ended up finishing first, while Madison and Callye were second.
Austin Akin finished in third place in the eighth-grade boys singles division. Matthew Dunn finished as the winner of the consolation division. Thomas Burrier and Jacob Vaughn finished second in eighth-grade boys doubles, while Bryce Scroggins and Enoc Clapp finished in third place.
In seventh-grade competition, Jazime Navarro and Morgan Brysch advanced to the second round in girls doubles play, and Marcos Marquez finished second in the boys singles division.
The Brahmas had a clean sweep in the boys doubles division, with Avery Monita and Mark Hernandez finishing first. Christian Aguilar and Tyler Forester finished second, and the team of Jacob Wallace and Dawson Lerma finished third. Jacob Hernandez and Travis Gutierrez finished fourth.
