John Patrick Sekula, a resident of Poth, Texas, entered eternal rest Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at the age of 48 years, 10 months, and 1 day. John was born June 14, 1965, in Floresville, the son of Mary Rose Maha and Henry Thomas Sekula Sr.

After graduation from Floresville High School, John attended Texas A&I in Kingsville and Texas State University in San Marcos to attain his Peace Officer certificate in law enforcement. John worked and resided in Seguin for many years, before moving to Poth two years ago. John traveled numerous places, studying history and collecting relics to satisfy his lifelong passion for the Civil War, and enjoyed being a member of the Poth Volunteer Fire Department.

John was preceded in death by his father, Henry Thomas Sekula Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Rose Sekula of Poth; his siblings, Dr. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs and husband Robert Gibbs Jr. of Houston, Henry T. Sekula Jr. and wife Trish of Houston, Phyllis Crider and husband Clinton of Leander, Russell Sekula of Kerrville, and Mary Frances Olson and husband Barton of Poth; his nieces and nephews, Michael Greenberg, Elysse Greenberg, Dr. Jacquelin Castillo and husband Joel, Kyle Olson, Brandon Crider, Jennifer Crider, and Henry Thomas Sekula III; and many aunts and uncles.

Visitation was held on Sunday, April 20, at 5 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the church, officiated by the Rev. Grzegorz Szewczyk. Interment followed in the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cemetery in Cestohowa. Serving as pallbearers were Barton Olson, Clinton Crider, Joel Castillo, Kyle Olson, Leroy Mutz, Brandon Crider, Thomas Sekula III, and Jesse Bryan. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Robert W. Gibbs Jr., and Michael Greenberg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Poth Volunteer Fire Department, Attn: Lawrence Jansky, P.O. Box 777, Poth, TX 78147.
