SAN ANTONIO -- Officials from the Bexar County Fire Marshal’s Office believe that embers from a lit cigarette touched off a massive April 28 blaze on Owenwood Drive in South Bexar County. The fire that devoured an estimated 200 acres was 100 percent contained that evening.

“This goes to show how serious Red Flag Warning days are,” said Bexar County spokesman Laura Jesse.

Members of more than a dozen fire departments from Bexar, Atascosa, and Wilson counties -- from as far away as Floresville --and from area Air Force bases were called in to tackle the fire that ignited at approximately 4:30 p.m. Jesse said an elderly man was smoking a cigarette outside his home before noticing a grass fire. The flames devoured his home, a shed, and a third structure before spreading into adjacent tall, dry brush and threatening as many as 15 other homes. Residents of those houses were evacuated into an American Red Cross shelter at the 9th Grade Academy on U.S. 281.

The elderly man was transported to Mission Trails Baptist Hospital after complaining of chest pains.
