Letter: Vets home volunteer luncheon
The Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home hosted a volunteer appreciation luncheon on April 24 in the American Legion Hall in Floresville. More than 50 volunteers were fed a tasty chicken dinner and dessert. Each volunteer was invited to stand up and introduce themselves and tell a little about their experience with the residents of the home.
Octogenarian Doug Walpole and his band, which includes Pat and Wayne Dubose and other members, spoke of how long they’ve been playing for the residents. John and Linda Turner spoke about how they coordinate the Christmas gifts for the residents. John plays Santa Claus. Another Santa Claus was also present.
Volunteers who are members of the VFW from Poth were also there. Some of the volunteers came all the way from New Braunfels to share why they volunteer for the veterans. Some of the volunteers hold church services, some just hold hands of the veterans, and some sing and play instruments like piano, fiddle, guitar, and organ for the residents. Some volunteers call bingo.
If you have the desire to volunteer or give back to the many men and women veterans who have protected our country, please contact Fran Houghney at the Tejeda Veterans Home in Floresville at 830-216-9456.
