KINGSVILLE -- La Vernia’s track and field teams had some great performances at the Class 3A Region IV meet this past weekend at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Great weather and tremendous competition brought out the best in all competitors.

On the girls side, freshmen Peyton Ford and Ashton Swize teamed with juniors Ashland Newberg and Lilia Novatnak to place fifth in the 4x100-meter relay. Going into the finals with the eighth-fastest time, the Lady Bears ran out of lane eight and clocked a fully automatic time of 50.17. After a quick recovery, Ford lined up in the 100-meter dash against West Oso’s Akeyla Mitchell, the defending state champion in both the 100- and 200-meter events. La Vernia’s speedy freshman turned in a 12.69 (F.A.T.) to finish fourth. Junior Olivia Hinojosa qualified for state on Friday in the 3,200-meter run with a silver-medal finish behind Lytle’s Natalie Cortez. Hinojosa returned on Saturday to win gold in the 1,600-meter run, this time edging Cortez.

“The competition is always great here at Region IV,” said Lady Bear Head Coach Richard Hinojosa. “Last year, of the 17 events, nine were won at state by girls from our region. This year our region was tougher overall than it’s been in a long time. Our kids competed hard and represented La Vernia wonderfully. A special thanks to our senior regional qualifiers Ashley Nanton (800 relay), Bailee Vrana (1600, 3200), and Courtnie Ybarra (discus) for their leadership and contributions to our team.”
