FLORESVILLE -- The seventh annual Floresville Long Term Care Senior Olympics is scheduled for Monday through Friday, May 12-16, during National Nursing Home Week. Activity directors and social workers from the three Floresville Nursing Homes (Floresville Residence and Rehab, Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home, and Regency Manor Nursing and Rehab) have joined together to plan a fun-filled week for Floresville Long Term Care residents.

The week will commence on Monday at 9:30 a.m. with a parade, which will leave Regency Manor Nursing & Rehab going to Floresville Residence and Rehab Center, and concluding at Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home. The administrator and director of nurses of each facility will present the Olympic flag and torch to their residents. Floresville Mayor Diana Garza will lead the parade. Also participating will be Apollo Ambulance showcasing the American flag, along with other employees of the nursing homes. Community leaders are invited to show their Olympic spirit and support by joining us at Regency Manor on Monday for a rousing, fun-filled kickoff celebration. Mark your calendars and make plans to help us have a good turnout.

Competition in the Olympic Games will begin on Tuesday, May 13, at 9:30 a.m. at Regency Manor Nursing and Rehab, where residents will compete in Hoops, Wheelchair Races, Javelin Throw, Cow Chip Toss, and Donkey Tails. Floresville Residence and Rehab will host the second day of competition on May 14, where residents will try their hand at Discus, Hole N One, Wet T-shirt Contest, Toilet Paper Toss, and Olympic Ring Toss. Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home will host the third day of games on May 15 with competitions in Grenade Toss, Basic Training, Sharp Shooting, Brain Drain, Calvary Roper, and Jeep Brigade.

The week will conclude on Friday at 9 a.m. for the dance, presentation of the medals, and barbecue at the Floresville River Park. Winners will receive medals at 11 a.m. Prior to the awards presentation, residents will enjoy a dance from 9-10 a.m. with music by D.J. Magic, and an hour of bingo from 10 to 11. Lunch will follow with Apollo furnishing and cooking brisket.

Friends, relatives, and the community are invited to join the fun on any or all of the day’s events. Donations of bingo prizes for the residents would be greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the veterans home prior to the event on May 16.

The Long Term Care Facilities of Floresville appreciate those who volunteer and help with these special events. Nursing home residents are eagerly anticipating a week of fun events at the Senior Olympics 2014. Let’s show them a good time.
