Editor:

We are excited to offer FISD parents of English speakers the opportunity to choose to participate in the bilingual, dual language immersion program. Three parent meetings have been held this spring to inform parents of this new option. Interested parents have signed up and have been asked to observe a bilingual classroom. To learn more about a Bilingual, Dual Language Immersion program you can visit http://bit.ly/1hsmFez.

The state requires districts to collect a Home Language Survey for every student. This information is used to identify English Language Learners (ELLs) -- students who are learning the English language in addition to their native language. If there are more than 20 students identified as being ELL’s in a grade level in elementary, the state mandates a bilingual program be provided for those ELL students.

FISD has offered a bilingual program for many years. For the 2014-15 school year, a dual language immersion program will be implemented in pre-k through first grade. Dual language is an educational model that integrates native English speakers and native Spanish speakers as they learn together for the entire school day. By placing importance on both languages, we are preparing FISD students for the multicultural, multilingual society in which we live. Research has shown that both Spanish speakers and English speakers benefit from this instructional model.

SHERRI BAYS, Ed.D.

Superintendent, Floresville ISD

Be Careful... Your reply does indicate a touch of supernatural ability to detect a hint of 'stercore tauri' in my comments. LOL

Not sure, Dr Bays addressed my concerns. However, the people have been informed as best as I know how and they will do as they please. My only recommendation is: if you are going to have a native English speaking child who ... More ›

Yep, I told Wilbur that his contraption would never get off the ground. Based on research by self proclaimed experts, I informed him that if God had intended for man to fly, he would've given him wings. :-)

Has anybody stopped to wonder how the answer to Mr. Shaffer's letter to the editor was answered in the same issue? Answers usually take a week. Just sayin'.

Bob Pritts.... Congratulations on your support for the dual language program. You can never start too early in preparing the children to compete in the ever increasing competition for 'Tour Guide' jobs. :-)

One disadvantage of teaching students to communicate in more than one language is the enhanced ability to spread their institutional induced stupidity to a larger group.
