FLORESVILLE -- Pending approval from the Floresville City Council, various rental fees at the Lauro G. De Leon III Floresville Event Center will increase.

At its April 28 meeting, the Floresville 4A Corp. board approved the following:

•Rental of the rodeo arena will remain at $250 per day, with a $75 per truckload charge for water hauled to the site.

•No longer will the use of audio/visual equipment in the ballroom be billed separately. Instead, these fees will be included in the $2,300 base rental rate.

•For ballroom functions of 700 guests or more, the fee for a second concession window will increase from $250 to $300.

•The fee for catering services to use the kitchen will increase from $150 to $300.

Also during the meeting, the board engaged in a lengthy discussion about a calendar of summer events proposed by the Boys & Girls Club of Wilson County. The item was brought up by City Manager Henrietta Turner, who said she sought direction from the board on how to proceed.

Gloria Estrada Martinez, the event center’s administrative assistant, alleges that the club’s Executive Director Debbie Bolf -- who was not present at the meeting -- sometimes will reserve rooms and not use them, cutting the corporation out of revenue that could have been derived from renting those spaces.

The discussion often digressed to difficulties between Martinez and Bolf over the club’s $500-per-year contract to lease space in the center. Attorney Rob Killen reminded the group that this was not the subject of the agenda item and urged them to focus on the topic at hand.

Mayor Diana Garza, who was in the audience, chastised the board because of the need for Floresville’s children to have a place to go in the summer -- even if the center’s location on S.H. 97 West makes it less than ideal.

“We’re all for the kids and seniors in the community,” she said. “If you don’t want them there, tell them that.”

“We can’t just keep kicking the can down the road,” said board member Andy Joslin.

When it came time for a vote, LeAnn Drozd moved to disapprove Bolf’s proposed calendar, which was seconded by Conoly. The two, along with Bill Gleeson, voted in favor of Drozd’s motion.

While discussion continued among the members as to whether the rest were in favor or in opposition of the motion, Gleeson moved to ask city staff to meet with Bolf and settle the disagreement. Joslin seconded Gleeson’s motion and the vote passed unanimously, without any mention of the vote on Drozd’s motion.

In other business, the board reappointed Paige Pullin and Conoly as secretary and treasurer, respectively. Pullin was not present for the meeting.

Also in attendance: Board members Melissa Popham and Traci Jaskinia.

The Floresville 4A Corp. has proposed the following fee changes for use of the Lauro G. De Leon III Floresville Event Center:
.......................................CURRENT....PROPOSED
•Kitchen use...................$150...........$300
•Second concession........$250...........$300
