After beating Taft in a best-of-three series, the East Central Hornet softball team advanced to the area round of play. Unfortunately for the Black and Gold, the team lost a pair of 1-run games to San Marcos, ending the team’s 2014 playoff run.

In the first game of the series, San Marcos jumped out to a 4-run lead in the top of the first inning. The Lady Rattlers added another run in the top of the fourth and led 5-0. East Central came back in the bottom of the fourth to score a run, and got two more in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 5-3 game in favor of San Marcos.

The Lady Rattlers weren’t able to score again in the top of the seventh, but East Central had to have 2 runs to keep the game alive. The Hornets scored 1 run, and fell by the final score of 5-4.

Game two was held in San Marcos, and it was once again the Lady Rattlers who scored first. With 1 run in the bottom of the first, East Central had to play from behind again. The Hornets fired right back in the top of the second inning, though, scoring 2 runs, and taking their first lead of the series. San Marcos came back to tie things in the bottom of the third inning, and then took a 2-run lead after the fourth inning of play.

The Hornets were able to get 1 run back in the fifth inning to make it a 4-3 game, but were held scoreless from there, as the Lady Rattlers secured a 4-3 victory, and the area championship.

The Hornets’ season is over, but East Central had a great year. The team finished with an overall record of 24-8, and was 7-3 in district to finish second. The Hornets can also celebrate a bi-district championship.

The Hornets will have some big cleats to fill as Taylor Doege, Alexis Macias, and Hailey Miller graduate, but the team will return most of its starters, including juniors Haydi Bugarin, Madison Strunk, and Chelsea Taylor, just to name a few.

Congratulations, Hornets, on a great 2014 campaign.
