LA VERNIA -- Needing just four and a half innings to get the job done at home last Friday night, the La Vernia Bear baseball team scored 15 runs in a lopsided bi-district playoff win over Fredericksburg.

Anthony Sherrard was on the hill for the Bears. He started the game by giving up a walk to the first batter, but Sherrard and his defense got out of the inning without giving up a run. Parker then doubled to start out the Bears’ first-inning efforts at the plate, but the side was retired with no score on the board.

After a three-up, three-down defensive stand in the top of the second inning, the Bears put their bats to work in the bottom of the frame. Cole Lowry started things off with a single to right field, and Christian Bruce followed suit with a single to center field. Tristan Gardner then ripped a triple into left field, easily scoring Lowry and Bruce. Colby Skelton doubled, and Sherrard drew a walk to load the bases. Justus Parker then hit a grand slam over the left-field fence to clear the bases and give La Vernia a 6-0 lead. Fredericksburg got out of the inning shortly thereafter, but some damage was done.

The Billies attempted to climb back into the game in the top of the third inning after scoring 3 runs. La Vernia got those back in the bottom of the inning, though, as well as 2 more. A total of 5 runs from Lowry, Gardner, Skelton, Justin Trevino, and Rudy Mendoza gave the Bears an 11-3 advantage.

La Vernia held Fredericksburg in the top of the fourth inning, and then added 4 more runs in the bottom half of the inning as Lowry, Skelton, Sims, and Trevino all ran across home plate.

The Bear defense did its job in the top of the fifth for another three-up, three-down inning, and La Vernia celebrated a 15-3 victory and bi-district title.

La Vernia is scheduled to face Giddings later this week in the area round of playoffs, though details were unavailable as of press time. For updates and results, visit www.wilsoncountynews.com.
