Shawnee Allen wins gold at state
La Vernia freshman Shawnee Allen shows off the gold medal she won at the UIL Golf State Tournament. Allen was the first La Vernia female golfer to qualify for the state tournament, and made the most of the opportunity by winning gold. Congratulations!
A great season got even better for freshman golfing sensation Shawnee Allen of La Vernia, as she won the Class 3A UIL Golf State Tournament last week in Bastrop.
Allen, who has been golfing since she was 3, began her freshman campaign on a high note, winning the Smithson Valley Fall Invitational in her first high school tournament. From there, she went on to finish second at the Brandeis tournament. As the year rolled on, Allen either placed or won in every tournament in which she competed.
“Shawnee had an exceptional year for anyone, but especially for a freshman,” said La Vernia Golf Coach Kyle Andrews.
With the invitational tournaments over, Allen played in the District 28-3A tournament, and absolutely ran away with it. She shot a 77 on the first day and a 73 on the second day, giving her a two-day total of 150 -- a score that was 33 strokes ahead of the second-place finisher.
The district champ then moved on to the Class 3A Region IV tournament, and once again had no trouble with the competition. Allen shot a 76 on the first day and shaved seven swings off her score of 69 on day two, giving her a total of 145. She easily won the Region IV title by 10 strokes, finishing ahead of Navarro’s Courtney Ward to become the first female golfer from La Vernia to qualify for the state tournament.
Allen went to Bastrop April 28-29 to compete against the best in the state at the Wolfdancer course.
After the first day of play, the freshman found herself at the top of the leaderboard, having shot a 72. She was then paired with Sarah Moore, the two-time defending state champion, on the second day of the competition, but wasn’t rattled in the least.
“[She] was not intimidated at all,” Andrews said. “Shawnee has the composure of someone much older than a freshman in high school. Maybe to me, one of the most important characteristics that Shawnee has is that she is able to stay in the moment very well for a high school kid.”
Allen shot a 77 on the day, while Moore shot a 78. Sarah Black of Andrews High School shot a 75, but didn’t have enough to overtake Allen. With a final score of 149, four strokes ahead of Black, six strokes ahead of third-place finisher Kalli Jennings of Andrews, and nine strokes ahead of Moore, Allen was named as the Class 3A state champion.
“Shawnee is the best 3A high school girl golfer in the state,” Andrews said, “and she has the potential to get even better.”
