KARNES CITY -- Traffic flow has resumed on a stretch of U.S. 181 here as firefighters from agencies throughout the region have continued battling a fire at Supreme Vacuum Services. The blaze was touched off at approximately 1:30 p.m. when officials say at least two tanks were struck by lightning.

Wilson County Health and Public Safety Office Coordinator Edwin Baker -- who also serves as chief of the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department -- said crews from Stockdale and La Vernia were en route to the Gillett area for a report that lightning struck a tank on S.H. 80. However, they were diverted to assist firefighters in Karnes City.

Baker said a rescue team from Stockdale was pulled from the scene twice to aid in water rescues on opposite sides of Karnes City. However, when firefighters arrived, there was no one with the trapped vehicles.

At least two tanks and a pump house were destroyed at Supreme Vacuum Services, Baker said. There also were several semi-tractors and trailers, and passenger vehicles damaged by the flames. However, there were no known injuries. Company officials could not be reached for comment.
