La Vernia plans drainage survey, town hall meetings

La Vernia Mayor Robert W. Gregory (right) honors former city Councilman D. Bradford Beck May 8 for his service to the city. Beck recently stepped down from presiding over the La Vernia Municipal Development District board. He also served as the city’s mayor at one time.
LA VERNIA -- M&S Engineering will perform a citywide transportation and drainage survey for the city of La Vernia. A series of town hall meetings will be scheduled to facilitate this.
The La Vernia City Council unanimously approved hiring San Antonio-based M&S Engineering during the May 8 council meeting. The goal is to start the survey within six months; the process will begin with a series of town hall meetings with citizens in an effort to determine specific issues.
Mayor Robert W. Gregory said he hoped the town hall meetings can take place in the first few weeks of June.
Also receiving council approval was rezoning of a lot located at 128 Bluebonnet Road from retail to general commercial. The application, an accountancy office run by Cynthia Buerkle, CPA, was approved last month. According to City Secretary/Treasurer Angela Cantu, all the businesses on that side of the street are zoned retail; this rezoning reflects the nature of Buerkle’s business.
In the shadow of the May 10 municipal elections, the council honored one of its own. Former La Vernia mayor, city councilman, and outgoing La Vernia Municipal Development District (MDD) board President D. Bradford Beck received recognition for his service to the city.
“His service to our community has been exemplary,” Gregory said.
The entire council heartily saluted Beck for his work, especially his recent years with the MDD.
Also during the meeting, the city, through a proclamation, declared the month of May as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month. City residents are encouraged to do all they can to ensure the safety of motorcyclists on the streets.
In other matters, the council:
•Approved moving a maturing CD into a savings account to help pay for a city well project; the well is expected to come online and begin producing water in August.
•Tabled consideration of a contract to hire a city administrator. The budget was amended, however, to account for expenditures required for the new position.
