WILLIAM J. GIBBS JR./Reprints at wilsoncountynews.com —
Bertha Lomas (back, l-r), Patricia Jackson, Juan Mata, and Shirley Grammer visit with Wilson County Judge Marvin Quinney and the Wilson County Commissioners Court May 12 after the commissioners voted to proclaim May 26 as “Dr. John Sutherland Day.” Sutherland, who provided wartime medical care to troops at the Alamo, went on to found the community of Sutherland Springs.
Wilson County Judge Marvin Quinney and commissioners Albert Gamez, Paul Pfeil, Ricky Morales, and Larry Wiley signed a proclamation during the May 12 commissioners court meeting, declaring May 26 as “Dr. John Sutherland Day” in Sutherland Springs. Shirley Grammer, Patricia Jackson, Bertha Lomas, and Juan Mata appeared before commissioners court to request the designation. It was unanimously approved.
The Sutherland Springs Cemetery Association invites the public to the dedication of a Texas State Historical Marker, and the dedication of two Texas Ranger Crosses for Pat Craighead and Charles Peyton Warren, on Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m.
Dr. John Sutherland came to present-day Wilson County circa 1849 and settled near Cibolo Creek in present-day Sutherland Springs. He deeded 5 acres of his ranchland to the community of Sutherland Springs in 1860 for a cemetery. His wife, Margaret Ann Lucas Dickson Sutherland, was the first burial in 1862.
