Spencers, Laskowski celebrate 10 years in produce business
LOIS WAUSON —
Commuters on U.S. 181 are drawn to “Garden Fresh Produce” by its bright yellow sign. Owners Fred and Diane Spencer (l-r) and Chester Laskowski offer farm-fresh produce each Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at their location between South Texas Ice and Richardson Bros. in Floresville.
It’s summertime in South Texas, and several local producers are celebrating 10 years in service.
Fred and Diane Spencer, former residents of San Antonio, moved to Wilson County in May 2004. They had a small garden in San Antonio, and shared fresh produce with their friends and wanted to continue raising vegetables.
Soon the couple met Chester Laskowski, who was well-known for “Chetski’s hot sauce” and “Chester’s Chow Chow.” They joined forces to sell their produce at the Wilson County Courthouse Square in Floresville.
Diane said the trio had different locations through the years, but found their current location, next to Richardson Bros. in Floresville, two or three years ago.
The trio, 10 years later, continues to offer fresh produce, now established as “Garden Fresh Produce.”
Currently, they offer onions, red potatoes, carrots, a variety of squash, and tomatoes.
Chetski’s hot sauce and Chester’s Chow-Chow, made from farm-fresh produce from Laskowski’s garden, also are available for purchase.
Watch for peppers -- serrano, bell, and jalapeño -- and both pickling and slicing cucumbers, as well as okra and cantaloupes, coming soon. With the recent rain, Diane expects more produce will be available.
Hours are Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., sometimes later, at their location on U.S. 181 between South Texas Ice and Richardson Bros. in Floresville.
