Watermelon Jubilee coming in June
The Stockdale Chamber of Commerce held its last regular monthly meeting on April 28 and the board is busy finalizing plans for the 70th annual Watermelon Jubilee that is now just a few weeks away!
Jubilee festivities get started on Saturday, June 7, this year with the second annual Watermelon Jubilee Golf Tournament, which will be held at the River Bend Golf Club in Floresville. Entry fee is $75 per golfer, or $300 per team. Register by June 5 for $280 per team. For information, call Jesse Vela at 830-391-4335 or Donald Bennett at 830-391-2467.
The Former Queens Tea will be held Sunday, June 8, from 2-4 p.m. in the Stockdale High School cafeteria. It is a great opportunity to meet the candidates for this year’s Jubilee and Rodeo courts! If you are a former Jubilee or Rodeo queen (or both!), make plans to attend!
The Coronation of Queen Melone LXX and the Court of Black Gold Royalty will take place Saturday, June 14, at 7 p.m. in the Stockdale Elementary School cafeteria. Take your chamber of commerce membership card for free admission.
The annual Watermelon Jubilee Volleyball Tournament will be held Saturday, June 14, at 9 a.m. in the Stockdale City Park. Entry is $100 per team, with cash prizes to the winners. For information or to register, contact Jesse at 830-391-4335.
Jubilee weekend will kick off Thursday, June 19, with turn-in and judging for the Watermelon Growing Contest from 4-8 p.m. at 1009 West Jackson St. in Stockdale. Entries received on or before Friday, June 6, are $25; entries after Friday, but before 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, are $50. All entries must submit a donation of five watermelons to be turned in at the official weigh-in on Thursday.
Also on Thursday will be the LTR Jubilee Bull Buck-Out beginning at 7 p.m. in the rodeo arena. Tickets are $15 at the gate or online at www.ticketweb.com. Thursday night entertainment includes a concert by “Junction 541” from 9 p.m. to midnight.
For the duration of Jubilee weekend, children 10 and younger get in free!
Friday festivities will begin with the crowning of Miss Rodeo Stockdale 2014 and her court during the Lester Meier Rodeo Company pre-show beginning at 7 p.m., followed by the first installment of the Watermelon Jubilee Rodeo including mutton bustin’ and calf scramble. Concerts for Friday will feature “Micky & The Motorcars” opening for the “Josh Abbott Band.”
Saturday’s event includes the Watermelon Crawl 5K and Kids Crawl Fun Run. Registration forms are available at www.stockdaletx.org or at the Brahma Bullpen.
The annual Watermelon Jubilee parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, and will feature Wilson County Judge Marvin Quinney as grand marshal. Parade entrants can register by downloading an entry form from our website or by filling one out at City Hall.
Following the parade, the City Park will be full of family fun with activities for all ages. Admission for Saturday afternoon is free.
The Jubilee will conclude Saturday night with the final installment of the rodeo and concerts by Dub Miller and the “Randy Rogers Band.”
Presale tickets for the rodeo and concert performances are $20 per person from any Jubilee or Rodeo Court candidate, at Brahma Bullpen, or at Brahma Express. Tickets may also be purchased from www.ticketweb.com.
If you are interested in having a food, craft, or information booth on the grounds during Jubilee, visit www.stockdale.tx.org. Prospective vendors may also email email@example.com.
Sponsorship is a great way to advertise your business during Jubilee. The 2014 sponsorship package can be found on our website.
We hope to see you and your family next month at the 70th annual Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee!
Sherry D. Lambeck is the president of the Stockdale Chamber of Commerce.
