Stockdale Brahma art students sweep patriotic competition
First place — Taylor Baumann, pastel painting
By Missy Rae Rust
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wilson County Memorial Post No. 8555, and the Ladies Auxiliary hosted the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Competition this year.
Stockdale Art III students swept the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Competition, including:
•First place, $100 prize -- Taylor Baumann, pastel painting of a soldier in his Class A’s.
•Second place, $75 prize -- Raven Lerma, pencil drawing of a pile of dog tags.
•Third place, $50 prize -- Shannon Freasier, unique watercolor composition combining many different facets of the military.
Each artwork entered was “judged on the originality of concept, presentation, and patriotism expressed; the content of how it relates to patriotism and clarity of ideas; the design technique; total impact of work; and uniqueness.” The judges consisted of teachers, professionals, and persons knowledgeable in art.
A recognition ceremony was held May 4 at the local VFW post. Joyce Gorden, the committee chair and master of ceremonies, presented many awards for the Voice of Democracy, Patriot’s Pen, Young American Creative Patriotic Art, VFW Scholarships, and Auxiliary Scholarships to students from schools in Wilson County.
What is truly interesting about these artworks is that each student performed a lot of research before beginning their pieces. It gave them a better understanding of the project and what was being asked of them visually. Stockdale High School will proudly participate in this competition again next year.
As a former military member of 11 years, I feel honored to have my students express patriotism through their talent and skills acquired in art at Stockdale High School.
All of the above-mentioned artwork is displayed proudly in the foyer of Stockdale High School for viewing through the end of May 2014. Please congratulate these artists as you see them in the community and thank you for your continued support of our Brahma art students!
