Beware of CPS Energy imposters asking for payments

Customers have advised CPS Energy that they are receiving calls from individuals asking for payment of their bill to avoid disconnection of service. These individuals, whether through a phone call or a visit to your home or business, are imposters looking to steal money from CPS Energy customers.

CPS Energy never:
•Asks for payment or money at your home or place of business.
•Calls customers to request credit card or banking information over the telephone.
•Asks to enter your home unless you initiate the request for us to perform a specific service. CPS Energy does this only by appointment and with your prior knowledge.

If you receive these types of calls or visits, contact the San Antonio Police Department immediately and provide them with information about the incident, including any caller ID information, description of vehicle the individual may have been seen in, a license plate number, a description of the person(s) making the home visits, their name(s), or other identifiers that may help with the investigation.

If you ever have any doubt about the identity of a CPS Energy employee, call the CPS Security Hotline at 210-353-4000 to confirm that the individual is an actual CPS Energy employee.

Customers can make payments over the phone. However, those payments should be initiated by the customer and only if the customer makes the call directly to our Pay-by-Phone partner, JP Morgan Chase, at the following numbers:

•Residential Customers: 877-257-1172
•Commercial Customers: 855-290-7615.

Email scam

CPS Energy also warns that scammers are trying to email CPS Energy customers and have the customers enter personal information through their “fake links.”

If you should receive an email, CPS Energy advises:

•Do not click on links or open attachments
•Do not reply
•Know your account number -- the criminal won’t
•CPS Energy will never send you an email to request payment

If you suspect that a call, email, or visit is a fraud, call police.
