This series profiles area organizations that help meet needs in our communities.

Organization: South Texas Angel Paws Rescue

What it does: South Texas Angel Paws Rescue is an all-volunteer organization based in South Texas, with a mission to rescue dogs from high-kill shelters, abandonment, and other unusual situations, and adopt them to loving, caring homes. The volunteers rescue animals, foster them in their homes, and place them up for adoption. All animals are fully vetted.

They strive to rescue all types of dogs and cats.

Background: Animal shelters are often overcrowded, and many animals are euthanized -- often because their short window of time to be adopted runs out, or because they are too young or too sick to place. South Texas Angel Paws Rescue strives to save as many as it can, to bring happiness into the lives of the animals, who in turn bring happiness to their new humans.

By taking in animals, the organization alleviates shelter overcrowding and offers animals a chance at a good home. The volunteers often nurse animals back to health. The animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and wormed before being offered for adoption.

Volunteers also work to help injured or stray animals brought to the organization for care and adoption.

Events, fund-raisers: Volunteers host adoption events across the area most weekends; they also sell items at these events to help offset the costs of feeding and care for the animals awaiting adoption.

How you can help: Volunteers to foster cats and dogs are most welcome. Foster families care temporarily for the animals until they are adopted into a loving, forever home.
