Braedon H. Wegehaupt has received the honor of salutatorian for the La Vernia High School class of 2014. He is the son of Sam and Deanna Wegehaupt, brother to Kailee and Rayne Wegehaupt, and grandson of Dale and Gayle Wagner and JoAnn Wegehaupt.

Braedon was born in Silvis, Ill., but his family moved to Texas when he was four years old. He began attending school in La Vernia as a third-grader. Throughout high school, he participated in several school organizations and activities. He was a four-year football participant, lettering his sophomore through senior years, co-captain of the varsity football team his senior year, and received honorable mention to the district as well. He was a three-year basketball participant and participated in track his freshman year. He completed on the UIL science team for two years, receiving a fourth-place medal for individuals at district and first-place medal his junior year, and placed first overall in biology, second overall in chemistry, first place overall in combined sciences, and received a first-place team medal at district his senior year. Braedon also represented La Vernia for the first time ever in a UTSA robotics competition specializing in the sumo challenge. He and his team beat all other competing teams to take first place overall and win a $1,000 scholarship to UTSA. Braedon was also a member of National Honor Society his junior and senior years and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Highlights of Braedon’s junior and senior years also included placing second in class in agricultural mechanics with his hay spear at the San Antonio rodeo and third in class at the Houston rodeo; being a member of Wilson County Crime Stoppers, participating in Nobles Council, participating in the Texas Boys State Association as a state delegate, and receving $1,300 for his fifth-place traditional Western art work.

Braedon plans to attend Tarleton State University where he plans to major in mechanical engineering. He has been awarded the Dick Smith College of Engineering and Sciences scholarship in the amount of $12,000. He has also received the Toyota Scholarship for $1,250, the Alexander John-Cade Pugh Scholarship for $3,500, and is a finalist for the 2014 CEFPI Scholarship. Braedon is excited about his opportunity to attend college and becoming a Tarleton Texan.
