Ben Stevenson will be graduating as valedictorian of the class of 2014 with a grade-point average of 103.6. He is the son of Timothy and Harriet Stevenson and the brother of Daniel Stevenson.

Throughout his high school years, Ben has participated in band, National Honor Society, UIL Academics, class officers, track, and cross country. Outside of school, he is involved in the First Baptist of La Vernia Youth Group and the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio.

As a member of the Mighty Bear Band, Ben has played the oboe in concert season while playing various brass instruments in the marching band as needed, and was drum major his senior year. Ben has performed in Texas All-State ensembles for three years. His freshman year, he was second chair oboe in the Association of Small School Bands All-State Symphonic Band. His junior year, he was first chair English Horn in the Texas Music Educators Association 5A All-State Symphonic Band, and this year he was second chair oboe in the TMEA 5A All-State Symphony Orchestra. Ben was also selected as an Outstanding Performer at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition his sophomore and junior years. He performed with the La Vernia Mighty Bear Band in the recording that earned the band second place in the state for the TMEA Honor Band Process.

Ben has also competed on various UIL Academic teams, including social studies, math, and literary criticism. He has qualified for the regional Academic Spring Meet all four years. He served as class vice president his sophomore year and as president his junior and senior years. Ben was also recognized as an AP Scholar and as a National Merit Finalist.

He is extremely excited to be attending the University of Texas at Austin next year, where he will be studying music composition. He will also be continuing his oboe studies through lessons and ensemble performances.

Ben would like to thank his teachers, administrators, and fellow students at La Vernia High School for giving him a memorable high school experience. He is sad to exit this chapter of his life, but excited to see what God has in store for him as a college student.
