Offer condolences


Cynthia Jean Young Hays, a resident of San Antonio, texas, passed away Saturday morning, June 7, 2014, in the Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville at the age of 47 years and 14 days. Cynthia was born May 24, 1967, in San Marcos to Ernest D. and Frances Lorraine Sutherland Young.

She was raised in Floresville, and graduated from Floresville High School, class of 1985. She was the first National Merit Scholarship recipient from Floresville High School. Cynthia received her Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations in 1989 from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. Upon graduation, she returned to Texas and was a loan officer for San Antonio Teachers Credit Union. After a few years as a loan officer, Cynthia received her teaching certification and dedicated her life to teaching middle school theater arts in the East Central and Northside independent school districts in San Antonio. She had a passion for teaching theater arts and always found a part for each and every one of her students in her plays and musicals. Throughout her life, Cynthia traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in San Antonio.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Ralph W.C. and Marguerite Simkins Young; maternal grandparents Daniel Sam Sutherland Sr. and Melba Westfall Sutherland Shouse; and uncle Don A. Young.

Cynthia is survived by her son, Ethan Scott Hays of San Antonio; parents Ernest and Lorraine Young of Floresville; sister Judy Herndon and husband Gearis of Floresville; nephews Carter and Cameron Herndon of Floresville; aunts Peggy Sutherland Haug of Seguin and Loretta Young of Stockdale; uncle Sam Sutherland of Austin; and numerous other relatives.

Visitation was held on Friday, June 13, from 5-8 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Floresville.

A funeral service was held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the church, officiated by Pastor Mike Clements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alumnae Association Founder’s Fund of Mount Holyoke College, Mary E. Woolley Hall, 50 College Street, South Hadley, MA 01075-1486.
