Family, friends help Uhlig celebrate his 90th birthday
Joseph Uhlig (center) celebrates his 90th birthday with his children, (l-r) Carolyn Hill and Paul Uhlig, wife Dorothy Uhlig, and children Thomas Uhlig, Edward Uhlig, Elizabeth Chanoine, and Catherine Cabinan.
Joseph Uhlig’s 90th birthday fell on June 4, but this year it was celebrated early on May 18, 2014, with an open house at the home of Carolyn Hill, his daughter. The immediate family gathered around 11 a.m. and feasted on takeout plates of delicious barbecue from the Sacred Heart Parish Picnic. After lunch Joseph opened his presents, which included a genuine Bavarian hat and beer stein given by his granddaughter, Elizabeth “EB” Dean, who is living in Germany. Another granddaughter, Sara Uhlig from San Antonio, sang to him the beautiful song “For Good” from the musical “Wicked.”
At 2 p.m. the house was opened for visitors. Coffee, tea, and sweets were available including a German sweet chocolate cake made using an old family recipe and a vanilla pineapple cake made by Cherie Hill, a granddaughter-in-law. Also served was a monstrous cheeseball encrusted with toasted pecans, tart lemon squares, “fire-crackers,” and a variety of homemade cookies. In all more than 75 relatives and friends came to wish Joseph a happy birthday.
When reflecting on his 90th birthday, Joseph said, “I didn’t think I was going to make it,” and he thanked all his family and friends for being a part of the journey. Then, in a touching moment, Joseph gave a blessing to all those present.
