The 70th annual Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee is set for Thursday through Saturday, June 19-21, in Stockdale. The Stockdale Chamber of Commerce has been busy making preparations for all the festivities.

The weekend kicks off Thursday with turn-in and judging for the Watermelon Growing Contest from 4-8 p.m. at 1009 West Jackson St. in Stockdale.

New this year is the “Jubilee Market Days,” which opens at 6 p.m. and continues during the festivities. The market will open at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Stockdale City Park located off S.H. 123.

Also on Thursday will be the LTR Jubilee Bull Buck-Out in the rodeo arena at 7 p.m. Admission is $15 at the gate or on www.ticketweb.com.

Children 10 and under get in free all weekend.

“Junction 541 Band” will provide entertainment from 9 p.m. to midnight at the main pavilion.

Friday’s festivities will include the crowning of Miss Rodeo Stockdale 2014 and her court during the Lester Meier Rodeo Co. pre-show at 7 p.m.

Pre-sale tickets for the rodeo and concert are $20 per night, or $25 per person per night if you purchase at the gate. Tickets are available at the Brahma Bullpen or the Brahma Express in Stockdale.

The first of two rodeos produced by the Lester Meier Rodeo Co. will begin at 7:30 p.m., including a calf scramble and the ever-popular mutton bustin’.

The winner of the Watermelon Growing Contest will be announced during the rodeo halftime.

“Micky & The Motorcars” will open up on Friday night for the “Josh Abbott Band” at 8:30 p.m. at the main pavilion.

Saturday will be an early morning with day-of-race registration and T-shirt pick-up for the Watermelon Crawl 5K and Kids Crawl Fun Run beginning at 6:45 a.m. at 1009 West Jackson St. in Stockdale. Shuttle service to the starting point of the Watermelon Crawl 5K race will begin from that location at approximately 7:15 a.m. The Watermelon Crawl 5K race will begin at 8 a.m. near Jackson Nature Park on C.R. 401. The Kids Crawl Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m. at 1009 West Jackson St. The deadline for early registration for this year’s Watermelon Crawl 5K Run/Walk and Kids Crawl is 3 p.m. Friday. The annual Watermelon Jubilee Parade is Saturday at 10:30 a.m., featuring grand marshal Wilson County Judge Marvin Quinney.

Queen Melone LXX and the Court of Black Gold Royalty will make their first parade appearance.

Following the parade, the City Park will be full of family fun with activities for all ages, including kiddie games and attractions, live music, food and craft vendors, horseshoe and washer tournaments, and more. Admission into the park for Saturday afternoon is free.

Entertainers include “Elora & Gasoline Alley Band,” “Elvis Presley,” and “Mariachi Galas de Oro.” Watermelon will be abundant with the watermelon-eating contest, the Jubilee dog races, a Jubilee dog show, the Watermelon Olympics, and -- new this year -- a watermelon carving contest.

The 70th annual Watermelon Jubilee will conclude Saturday night with the final installment of the Lester Meier Rodeo Co. performance and a concert by Dub Miller opening for the “Randy Rogers Band.”
