Floresville Independent School District’s Reading Initiative, “Floresville Reads Millions,” was a great success this year. Our objective with the program is to instill a love of reading in our students so that they will become lifelong readers. We believe that academic achievement starts with reading, and our goal was for students to collectively read 8 million minutes by the end of the school year.

We met and exceeded our goal -- recording 9,347,392 minutes during the 2013-14 school year. We actually reached our goal of 8 million minutes by the end of April.

Kindle e-readers were awarded to our students each month to show our gratitude to them for their efforts and to motivate them to keep reading. We are very proud of our students and staff for making Floresville Reads Millions a great success. It is our hope that the momentum that was gained during the school carries over into the summer and students continue to read.

Floresville ISD is also thankful to those that supported our program throughout the school year. Parents and guardians are important partners in the education of our students and the success of Floresville Reads Millions is a direct result of that partnership.

A big thank you to H-E-B and Walmart for allowing us to display our “reading thermometers” throughout the school year to show our progress. FISD would also like to send a special thank you to the following for supporting our reading program financially in order for us to be able to purchase Kindle e-readers for our students: Smith Gas Company, Sralla Electric, Alex De Leon, and Paul and Terry Pfeil.
