New fire station taking shape
LA VERNIA -- Station 2 of the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department is under construction, and is expected to be complete by Oct. 15. This is according to Roberta Ensor, secretary of the Wilson County Emergency Services District (ESD) No. 1 board, following the board’s June 12 meeting.
The metal structure is being built on F.M. 3432 near its intersection with F.M. 775 west of La Vernia. It is part of the ESD’s continued push to provide better fire service to its coverage area through its relationship with the fire department, which Ensor said eventually could lead to lower fire-insurance premiums for properties located within the ESD.
A third station is being planned for construction near the corner of F.M. 539 and Great Oaks Boulevard southeast of La Vernia. Ensor said the station will be built sometime in 2015.
Also during the meeting, the board received an update on truck No. 3150, a 2007 Pierce midi-pumper that has experienced mechanical problems. Ensor said the repairs might be under warranty by Pierce. Otherwise, the fire department is allowed to spend up to $5,000 to fix the truck before having to bring the matter back to the board for approval.
In other business, the board:
•Nominated Bill Mainz to fill a vacancy on the board that resulted from Terry Post’s recent resignation. Final approval is subject to a vote by the Wilson County Commissioners Court.
•Voted to accept the ESD’s fiscal year 2013 financial audit report prepared by McCall Gibson Swedlund Barfoot, which gave the district’s finances an unqualified -- or “clean” -- opinion.
•Set Friday, July 11, as the date of a strategic planning session.
