James Malcolm Carnes
James Malcolm Carnes passed away after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, June 17, 2014. He was born Dec. 9, 1927, in San Antonio, Texas, to Webb M. and Zora Henson Carnes.
The youngest of three sons, he attended Jefferson High School and the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. After a short stint in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II, he returned to UT to finish his business degree. At his eldest brother’s wedding in Houston he met Lucille Kemp, a friend of the bride. He and Lucille married in June of 1951 and had two daughters, Cecille Carnes Daniel of Wichita Falls and Nancy Carnes Ives of Denver and San Antonio. After Lucille’s death in 1994 Jim later married Louise Leftwich of Lubbock and San Antonio.
Jim’s three passions were his family, his family’s history in Texas, and the outdoors, including sports.
He is survived by his brothers, Webb M. Carnes Jr. of Houston and Richard Cole Carnes and wife Eleanor of San Antonio; daughters Cecille Carnes Daniel and husband Bill and Nancy Carnes Ives and husband Chris; stepchildren Julie Lawson, Howard Lawson and wife Nancy, and the late Linda Burnett and husband Bill; grandchildren James W. Daniel and wife Colleen, Robert F. Daniel and wife Lindsey, Clark L. Daniel, Mark J. Roddy, and Emily Roddy Oster and husband Luke; seven great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to the loyal staff that cared for him and Louise these past years, including Margarita Gonzales, Michelle Vargas, Claudia Amaro, Hope Martinez, Diana Felan, Susana Belo, and Richard Tijerina.
Visitation was held on Monday, June 23, from 4-6 p.m. in the Porter Loring Mortuary in San Antonio.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Alamo Heights United Methodist Church in San Antonio.
Memorial donations may be made in his honor to Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, Morningside Ministries, Boysville San Antonio, or Vitas Hospice.
