It is with profound sadness that the Archdiocese of San Antonio relays that retired Auxiliary Bishop Bernard F. Popp was called to the Lord in the early morning hours of June 27. Bishop Popp was 97 years old, and served as a priest of the archdiocese for 71 years.

Bishop Popp, a native of Nada, Texas, was born on Dec. 6, 1917. He was ordained to the priesthood on February 24, 1943. He was consecrated as auxiliary bishop on July 25, 1983, and retired as auxiliary bishop in 1993.

He served as priest-secretary to Archbishop Robert E. Lucey for 23 years. In addition, he served as pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Parish, St. Paul Church, as the founding pastor of Holy Spirit Parish, and as rector of San Fernando Cathedral.

Following his ordination as Auxiliary Bishop, Bishop Popp became director of the Department of Personnel Services for the archdiocese, and traveled tirelessly to promote collaboration and lay ministry.

In 2003, he eventually retired to Casa de Padres, a residence for retired priests, but continued to assist in parish ministry as needed.

Funeral arrangements are currently pending.
