Jailhouse ‘meth’ twosome accepts plea deal
Two men are headed for the state prison system after accepting plea deals June 23 in Wilson County District Court.
Royce Houston Smith, 40, and 30-year-old Basilio Garcia were charged with possession of a prohibited substance in a correctional facility, in connection with a May 2013 incident in the Wilson County Jail. A third suspect was arrested and charged after a Texas Ranger investigation revealed that she was smuggling methamphetamine into the jail via a shop where the two men were assigned as trustys.
Court records indicate that Garcia pled guilty while Smith entered a nolo contendere -- “no contest” -- plea. Judge Donna Rayes of the 81st Judicial District sentenced each to two years in prison.
Assistant District Attorney Audrey Louis of the 81st Judicial District confirmed that if Smith had gone to trial, he faced the possibility of up to 20 years’ incarceration because of a prior prison term.
“We’re not going to turn a blind eye to [inmates] bringing narcotics into the jail,” she said.
The pair entered their pleas prior to a jury being selected for their trial.
Also among the suspects listed on the docket June 23 was 49-year-old Jerry Lee Janysek of Poth, charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He subsequently was charged with retaliation in connection with the July 27, 2013, shooting of another Poth man. Court records indicate Janysek will return to court for a docket call July 23, with jury selection ahead of his trial set for Aug. 4.
