STOCKDALE -- An 81-year-old Sutherland Springs woman is being treated for her injuries at University Hospital in San Antonio following a near-fatal crash July 10 at the junction of U.S. 87 and S.H. 97 west of here.According to Trooper Joseph Lerma of the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol, Maurine Barker was flown from the scene via AirLife helicopter.

According to Lerma’s preliminary investigation, Barker was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of U.S. 87 from S.H. 97 East in a 1987 Oldsmobile Delta 88 sedan when she drove into the path of a southbound 2006 Ford F-350 pickup truck being driven by 52-year-old Mario Salazar Aguilar of Stockdale. The pickup truck struck the Oldsmobile between its driver-side doors.

Wilson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Franklin Ashton, who was first to respond to the scene, said that Barker was partially ejected from the vehicle and initially was unresponsive. She regained consciousness and was treated at the scene by members of the Stockdale Emergency Medical Services while AirLife was en route.

The crash remains under investigation.
