Morgan Shepherd plans to make his second NASCAR Sprint Cup start of the 2014 season on Sunday in the Camping World RV Sales 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. He’ll be behind the wheel of the No. 33 Chevrolet entry of Circle Sport.

“Morgan wanted another opportunity to run in the Cup Series and we had the availability to make it happen a New Hampshire,” Circle Sport team owner Joe Falk said. “Morgan has always been a great ambassador of the sport of NASCAR and brought along the funding to make it possible to put him back in a competitive car on the Sprint Cup circuit. It’s a reunion of sorts, as Morgan drove for me in a few races in the late 90s, and I’m glad we were able to get Thunder Coal back on the car as Morgan extends his record this weekend in our Circle Sport entry.”

With the NHMS race start, he’ll break his own record as the oldest driver to compete in a Sprint Cup race at the age of 72 years, nine months and one day.

“It’s rewarding to know that someone has the belief in me to still be able to compete against the best race car drivers in the world with a properly funded race car,” Shepherd said. “These new cars are easier to drive than the ones when I started in the sport, even though they’re faster and have more horsepower, and I’m just looking forward to going out and competing on Sunday.”

In all, Shepherd had 516 Cup starts, with the first coming in 1970 and his first full-time season at the Cup level coming in 1981. He also earned his first series win in 1981 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. He claimed three additional wins, one in 1990 and another in 1993.

Shepherd competed in the July race at Loudon last year, driving a car fielded by Brian Keselowski. He started and finished 41st after completing 92 laps of the 302-lap race (a green-white-checker finish extended the race length by one lap).

In recent years, Shepherd has been racing primarily in the Nationwide Series, fielding his own car; however, he’s only made one series start, to this point, in 2014. In all, he has 352-career start at the Nationwide level, resulting in 15 wins.
