Bennett appointed councilman
After a four-month vacancy, Neal Bennett has been appointed Stockdale councilman for District V to fill the position vacated Feb. 4 by Roger Armstrong. Bennett’s term will expire in May 2015.
During the July 8 council meeting, Stockdale Fire Chief Edwin Baker presented data requested by the council during a previous workshop. See “Fire department calls” for breakdown. Baker did not have the data for responses in the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction.
In June, there were 10 calls, compared to 21 in May, he said.
City Marshal Jim Stewart gave the June marshal’s report. See “Marshal’s report” for numbers. Due to a drug bust, the vehicle seized during the arrest may be sold in auction.
Mayor Ray Wolff reminded the council that proceeds from the vehicle’s sale will benefit the city marshal’s office.
The council also:
•Approved the request by Stockdale Lions Club President Angelicque Schmidt, for the club to use the city park for a barbecue cook-off fund-raiser for the years 2015-17. The event is set for the third full weekend in March.
•Approved an ordinance to update personnel policy changes in the city’s employee handbook.
•Reached an agreement with Stevens Transportation.
The council also held a budget workshop after the meeting. Items discussed included:
•The hiring of an additional employee in the event the city manager deems it is necessary.
•The possible awarding of a $275,000 Texas Community Development Block Grant in September. Funds, if awarded, will be used to replace the water tower’s aerator and provide a 12-inch waterline from Business 87 to S.H. 123 along East Street.
