Floresville, Gonzales ink alternative school deal
WILLIAM J. GIBBS JR. —
Clay Rosenbaum, assistant superintendent for curriculum and student services for the Floresville Independent School District, addresses the board of trustees at its July 8 meeting.
The Floresville Independent School District (ISD) has accepted its portion of an interlocal agreement with the Gonzales ISD, related to the Floresville Alternative Education Center. Floresville’s board of trustees, at its July 8 meeting, made the unanimous vote.
Pending approval by their counterparts in Gonzales, Floresville’s trustees approved a three-year agreement. Gonzales joins nine other districts from Wilson and Karnes counties that send at-risk students and those with behavioral challenges to the school.
According to Assistant Principal Kendra Wuest, each of the districts participates at the rate of 1 percent of their total enrollment. Gonzales will be allotted up to 12 seats, and one additional seat in the school’s juvenile justice program.
Also during the meeting, the board has taken a stance against electronic cigarettes and vaporizer cigarettes, prohibiting the use of the smokeless alternative district-wide. This follows a recommendation from Clay Rosenbaum, Floresville ISD’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and student services.
The devices, also called “E-cigarettes,” have becoming an increasingly popular solution to smoking tobacco-filled cigars and cigarettes. According to a medicalnewstoday.com article, most E-cigarettes include a mouthpiece, heating element, rechargeable battery, and electronic circuits. The mouthpiece contains absorbent material drenched in a liquid solution -- some of which contains nicotine.
When the user sucks on the mouthpiece, the heating element is activated, vaporizing the liquid that is subsequently inhaled.
Other area districts, including the La Vernia ISD, already have banned the use of E-cigarettes on their campuses.
