Sgt. Lynn Floyd of the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol confers with Wilson County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Johnny Tejada Villarreal July 9 as members of the Eagle Creek Volunteer Emergency Services work at the scene of a fatal crash near the intersection of F.M. 2579 and C.R. 126.
Mark Sorenson, 62, of Graytown is dead and his 60-year-old wife, Mary, continues her recovery after the couple were involved in a head-on crash July 9 not far from their home. Officials at University Hospital in San Antonio said prior to press time Monday, July 14, that Mary Sorenson remained in critical condition.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Sgt. Lynn Floyd, the crash occurred at approximately 6 p.m. when 21-year-old Eddie Overstreet of Lacassas, Tenn., fell asleep at the wheel of his Dodge Ram pickup truck as he was northbound on F.M. 2579 near its intersection with C.R. 126. The truck crossed the centerline where it collided with the Sorensons’ Honda Pilot sport-utility vehicle.
Wilson County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Johnny Tejada Villarreal pronounced Mark Sorenson dead at the scene. Both Overstreet and Mary Sorenson were flown from the scene. Overstreet was treated at the San Antonio Military Medical Center, where a spokesman said he was released July 12.
Deputies from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office directed traffic away from the intersection for approximately three hours while troopers and members of the Eagle Creek Volunteer Emergency Services worked at the scene.
