La Vernia, Falls City finish in Lone Star Cup’s top 10
Each year, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) awards the Lone Star Cup to one school in each of the five classifications based on its overall team performances in district, area, and state championships.
Schools earn points based on their finishes in everything from marching band and football to golf, track, and One-Act Play. This year, two of the area’s schools finished among the top 10 in their classifications.
In Class 1A, Falls City finished in a tie for ninth place with 44 points. The Beavers and Beaverettes finished behind the schools from Weimer, Shiner, Windthorst, Muenster, Stamford, Forsan, Harper, and Sundown. Falls City tied Albany. Athletically, Falls City scored big points in football, basketball, and track and field.
The other school making the list in its classification this year was La Vernia. The Bears and Lady Bears had another great season, and locked in the No. 9 spot in Class 3A. Finishing ahead of La Vernia were the schools from Argyle, College Station, Kennedale, Abilene Wylie, Stephenville, Decatur, Liberty Hill, and Paris North Lamar. The Bears made a great run during the football, basketball, and baseball seasons, and the Lady Bears had another great year on the volleyball and basketball courts, as well as the softball diamonds. The track and cross-country teams were as strong as ever, and the La Vernia academics and band programs continue to shine throughout the year.
Congratulations go to these two schools, and best of luck to each of the area high schools during the 2014-15 academic year.
