NEDERLAND -- The Texas Nationalist Movement has called for a National Day of Action July 19 to demand action on the border crisis.

"The federal government has not only failed to protect our border, they created and encouraged this flood of illegal immigrants, many of them children, as political pawns," said TNM President Daniel Miller.

TNM members will be staging demonstrations in cities throughout the state to urge the state's leaders to take action in response to the federal government's failure to protect the border from invasion.

The TNM is a grassroots organization seeking Texas independence from the United States. For over a decade, the Texas Nationalist Movement has taken a leadership role on the border issue as one of the first voices to sound the alarm over the growing crisis.

TNM-led protests are planned in Austin, Beaumont, Big Spring, Canton, Fort Worth, Hondo, Houston, Lubbock, Richardson, Rusk, San Angelo, Yorktown and several other cities.

TNM Communications Director George Contreras said the organization is coordinating with other conservative political groups such as the Tea Party organizations which may be planning similar demonstrations.

"The unrestricted flow across the border has created a public health crisis and the added costs that go along with it," said TNM Director of Organizational Development Kimberly York of Lumberton. "Numerous polls have shown that immigration and the border are the top concerns for Texans consistently over the last four years."

TNM Executive Director Cary Wise of Hondo, a retired career law-enforcement officer, said the organization is concentrating its Day of Action call on two key actions Texas Gov. Rick Perry can take in response to the illegal-immigration crisis:

• Governor Perry should immediately fully militarize the Texas National Guard and Texas state Guard and deploy all of them to the Texas-Mexico border;

• Perry, as Governor, must call a special session to address making it illegal for any entity to execute a contract to house foreign detainees in Texas, expand Department of Public Safety operations in the border counties and making the expansion permanent,eliminate any statutory limits on enlistment in the Texas National Guard and the Texas State Guard, and establish a state challenge to the Plyler v. Doe Supreme Court decision of the 1980s which forces local taxpayers to pay for the education of illegal alien children.

"In 2013 alone, failed federal border policy cost the taxpayers of Texas more than $12 billion plus an additional $9 billion in education costs," said Gonzales resident Dave Mundy, the Republican nominee for State Board of Education District 3 and a TNM member. "Projections for this surge indicate that up to 60,000 of these illegal aliens will be entering the Texas school system this year. At $12,000 a student, you're talking a hit of $720 million to the taxpayers of local school districts in Texas. That's a tax increase of about $276 for every Texas citizen."

Miller said he was encouraged by recent news reports in which Gov. Perry asserted this crisis was manufactured by President Obama in an attempt to destroy Texas' vibrant economy by overwhelming it with social spending.

It is clear and compelling evidence that Texas can only save itself, not the Union, Miller said.

"The conscious failure to secure our border threatens our sovereignty, our political system and our economic well-being," he said. "We are calling on Governor Perry and the Texas Legislature to pass legislation calling for a referendum on Texas independence. The only way that Texas will ever have a secure border with Mexico is to declare our independence."
