Fizz! Boom! Read! at Falls City library
At the Falls City Public Library, it’s been a summer of fun with lots of activities and programs for all our eager readers. The first event was a visit from Mad Science of Austin and San Antonio, who showed us a lot of interesting experiments and explained how much science we use in our daily lives. The Astonishing Mr. Pitts was with us and astonished us with some amazing magic tricks. He brought along some of his friends to help him and kept us all entertained for the afternoon.
The following week the kids planted test tube terrariums and took them home to watch their seeds grow. On June 18, the Austin Reptile Show was here with a bunch of creepy, crawly critters that the children were able to touch. They learned a lot about some of the snakes in our area and how they can be beneficial to us, even though they look a little scary. Miss Karnes County and two of the beautiful princesses came by and dazzled all of us with a great story about Independence Day. Afterward, they helped the kids to decorate their own Fourth of July photo frame.
We wrapped up our program with an Ice Cream Social and let the kids make their own ice cream. It was a little hectic and messy, but the ice cream was good and cold on a hot afternoon. Every Thursday morning at 10 a.m. was story time with the library director, who read several interesting and fun books to the kids.
On July 11, certificates and door prizes were awarded to those in attendance. Cameron Laskowski was the winner of the Samsung Tablet in a drawing for the participants who read 25 or more books.
This year we had 78 children that signed up for the reading program and 63 of them received their certificates. That’s better than last year’s numbers and we are very grateful to all of the parents and caregivers that brought their kids to the library.
The Falls City Public Library would like to thank the city of Falls City, Palace Cafe, Pollok’s Store and Deli, and the Busy Beaver for their donations and support of the library and its programs. Since this has been such a great year for summer reading, we want to make it even better next year.
